FDQ Tier 1 · Opening soon

The best quality hands came up through the crew.

Tier 1 takes someone with no quality background into a first quality job: contractor QC tech or owner-side junior inspector, on the right-of-way and inside the fence. Get on the list and watch the first lesson now.

Lesson 1: Why weld maps exist

The lesson opens right away, with the weld map field card to print. After that, a few emails around the Tier 1 launch and nothing else. Reply to any of them to come off the list.

What Tier 1 covers

Twelve modules, each ending with what you can do after it.

  1. How a job runs and where QC sitsWho's who on a midstream job, and what QC checks at each step of construction.
  2. Quality fundamentalsHow quality is controlled, how a nonconformance gets handled, and records that survive turnover.
  3. The paperwork hierarchyWhere every requirement comes from, and which document wins when two disagree.
  4. Reading drawingsFind the right drawing and check the built work against it.
  5. Material and traceabilityMarkings, mill certs, and the trail from the mill to the weld.
  6. Weld mapping and weld recordsNumber and map every weld and tie it to its pipe, welders, procedure and NDE.
  7. Welding compliance for a non-CWI QCCheck the welding against the WPS and the welder's qualification.
  8. NDE basicsThe methods, the reports, and keeping NDE tied to the weld map.
  9. Coating and paintThe approved system, applied and recorded right, and damage found before burial.
  10. Bolted connectionsThe right parts, the approved tightening method, and a record for every joint.
  11. Tie-ins, fabrication and pressure testingFrom the tie-in plan and the shop to a signed test record.
  12. Conduct on siteRunning a QC day, reporting what you see, and keeping your signature worth something.

Where Tier 1 stops

Tier 1 teaches you to spot a problem and get it on the record. It doesn't replace a CWI, API 1169, AMPP or NDE cert, and it won't teach you to accept work that needs one of them to sign. Every module says where that line is.

Where a requirement changes from job to job, you learn where to find it in the project documents.

Who built it

I started as a field inspector and have worked quality on pipeline, LNG, compressor station and industrial jobs. Tier 1 is for the hand who already knows what good work looks like and wants the quality side next.
